“The Akai Professional S950 Midi Digital Sampler, to give it its full title, was an era-defining piece of equipment when it was introduced in the late 1980s, and for that retro sound nothings really matches this classic sampler.

This is the standard 512 Kwords (750 Kbytes), 48kHz sampling rate model with original floppy drive and display, operator’s manual and power cable.

I used this sampler for song writing and recording at home and in studios in the early 1990s and have included several disks of drum loops, drum kit sounds, keyboard sounds, brass sounds, woodwind sounds, guitar sounds and vocal sounds that I collected at that time. Condition wise the unit is in excellent condition has a couple marks here and there but shows light signs of use.

The unit was pulled from a working environment.

According to the previous original owner nothing was upgraded.

“1 x Akai S950 12bit sampler in fantastic condition!

Comes with fully maxxed out memory, power cable, original working floppy drive and a new back light that I fitted last year.

All inputs / outputs and buttons work just fine and I ran a full memory check today, completely filling with samples, no glitches.

Overall condition is amazing for its age- you are unlikely to find one with a cleaner faceplate. This unit sat unused on a famous (if you’re into oldskool jungle/hardcore) producer’s wardrobe for nearly 20 years- I saw it there myself when I bought it 5 or 6 years ago 🙂 I will throw in the box of samples that came with it when I purchased, would be a shame to split them up.

I’ve made many tunes of my own on this sampler, and the only problems I’ve had are the odd freeze here and there, plus some floppies going bad on me which is a very common problem. A good fix of course is to fit a Gotek drive, for more reliable storage, but I didn’t get round to that job yet. Another maintenance job would be to get the unit re-capped at some stage which is another common fix required on all electronics of this age at some stage.

If you’re looking at this auction, you already know what these machines do, and the great sound/workflow. I firmly believe the only way to get this authentic sound and feel properly is with the hardware. No emulation that I have seen can quite nail it B-)”

Ok I’ve had this sampler since about 1992.
Used it to make a record I produced in 1994 by UK rap group The Gutter Snypes.
As far as I can recall we upgraded the memory on this…It may even have an FX board as an added bonus. It’s been so long since I used it.
It’s just been in a bedroom during my younger days and stored away for the last 25!

As title says, used but fully functional. Comes with power cable. As you can see in the 3rd picture the screen is on but hasn’t been switched out to a high contrast screen so it’s a little hard to see. A few cosmetic marks and scratches but nothing major.”
